When, in 1967, John Norman published the first volume on Gor "Tarnsman of Gor", no one expected the following his series would gain.
Gor is a fictional earth like planet on the far side of our Sun. With a rotation that matches Earth's the planet of Gor is never visible to Earth.
Gor is loosely ruled by a race know as priest kings who server the purpose of stunting technological advances by it's human population. This explains why even today the warriors of Gor use swords.
Earthlings are from time to time kidnapped and taken to Gor. This is how the main character, Tarl Cabot, ends up on Gor. He is himself earth born.
Within this frame work Norman builds a caste society. There are warriors, merchants, builders and yes, slaves.
Some male slaves do exist, Tarl Cabot himself is enslaved in volume six and forced to serve his mistress. It is during this enslavement he is given the Bosk, which stays with him through the series.
Slavery on Gor is mainly a female occupation. Free women can be captured and branded as Kajira, the Gorean name for a female slave. Once captured she is totally owned by her master and must please him in all things. Norman spends a great many words of each volume, (28 volumes as of this writing) on this relationship.
Many of the pages take place in Paga Taverns, paga is the common Gorean drink. In these taverns a man is allowed to use the female slaves for the price of Paga.
While many people read the series for the science fiction aspect, a large number of people read for the BDSM and female submission aspects.
There are those who privately live the lifestyle of a Gorean Master and his Kajira.
